BUY STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE
Georgia State University offers health insurance to two primary groups of students, mandatory and non-mandatory (voluntary). Those students in the mandatory group are required to carry health insurance coverage during their program of study at Georgia State. Mandatory students will be automatically enrolled in the United Healthcare Student Health Insurance Plan and charged for the insurance on their student account. Mandatory students are required to pay the insurance premium listed on their student account directly to Georgia State University, payments should not be made to United Healthcare. If mandatory students are currently covered by an insurance plan (i.e. parent’s plan, individual plan, or family plan), they may waive the mandatory insurance and receive a credit on their student account.
Non-mandatory students or students that are not eligible for the mandatory plan may purchase student health insurance as part of the voluntary enrollment process with UnitedHealthcare and pay directly to UnitedHealthcare Student Resources (UHCSR).
Other students that require student health insurance are students participating in Optional Practical Training (OPT) and Visiting Scholars.
Federal regulations require mandatory students to be covered by health insurance throughout the duration of their program. The mandatory group consists of the following students:
- All graduate students are awarded a Full Tuition Waiver as part of their graduate assistantship award.
- All undergraduate, graduate, and English as a Second Language (ESL) international students holding F1 and J1 visas.
- Degree programs that require proof of health insurance, undergraduate and graduate (Nursing).
- International Scholars.
Mandatory Health Insurance Process
Mandatory students must register for classes before the health insurance charge can post to their student account. Also, students receiving full-time tuition waivers will not see the health insurance charge posted on their student account until their respective college has applied a waiver code. Insurance charges post once a day, early in the morning. Therefore, if you register in the morning today, your insurance charge will be post the next business day. Health insurance charges for mandatory students, posted directly to their student account, must make payments by the payment deadline through PAWS via PantherPay.
UnitedHealthcare receives a list of the mandatory group of students eligible for health insurance and allows the students to enroll in the student health insurance plan or submit an insurance waiver. If the mandatory student has existing insurance coverage (i.e. parent’s plan, individual plan, or family plan), the mandatory student may waive out of the insurance provided by the University and receive a credit on their student account.
After the waiver period ends, students with no action taken automatically enroll in the United Healthcare student health insurance plan.
Although mandatory students are automatically enrolled in the UnitedHealthcare student health insurance plan after the waiver period ends, their enrollment will need to be activated if the student needs to go to the doctor prior to the waiver period end date, and/or proof of insurance is needed quickly. Once the enrollment is complete, the insured student may use My Account to request the delivery of a permanent ID card through the mail. ID Cards are accessible via the mobile site at my.uhcsr.com. Permanent ID Cards are printed and mailed to the address on file after the open enrollment period ends.

Non-Mandatory Students (Voluntary Enrollment)
Students who are not in the mandatory group are eligible to purchase student health insurance for themselves as well as their dependents from UnitedHealthcare Student Resources (UHCSR) and these health insurance premiums are paid directly to UHCSR. Students must be enrolled in six (6) or more credits per semester to enroll in this insurance. Individuals with Optional Practical Training (OPT) approval, Postdoctoral Research Fellows, Visiting Scholars, and Postdoctoral Research Fellow Adjuncts are also eligible to purchase Voluntary Student Health Insurance. These individuals should select “Special” when enrolling online. Online enrollment takes a few minutes and you pay via credit card or eCheck to UnitedHealthcare Student Resources.
The coverage will be effective on the date the student enrolls. After the enrollment deadline, students will only be able to enroll with a qualifying event or wait until the next enrollment period.

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is off-campus employment authorization in a student’s field of study for twelve months after completion of their academic program. While on OPT, you are considered to be in F-1 status and must follow the regulations in order to maintain your status. Federal regulations require F-1 and J-1 students, as well as their dependents, to be covered by health insurance throughout the duration of their program. You may buy health insurance coverage from Georgia State University’s provider UnitedHealthcare, but you are not required to use our health care provider. Most students on OPT elect to be insured through their employer. If you are not employed, you may need to explore other insurance options available that will meet your needs.
